A place can be loved to death. I grew up in FL watching everything changed as heat seeking people flocked down to enjoy the sunshine. Change was good for the economy, not necessarily good for the soul or environment.
The A.T. has become a very popular trail. An average of 50 people a day begin in springtime.
The beginning of this trail is crowded. All kinds of people walk, many who have never hiked at all.
35 yrs ago I did backpack a portion of this trail. There were no cell phones, no shuttles, I didn’t meet a hostel. Very few hikers.
With such an influx of hikers-people to this wilderness, comes a certain amount of strain to the environmental system. Basically more shit.
I could write a blog citing all the things that cause diarrhea while hiking, but there are plenty of articles that do this justice.
Articles written by people who have much more education with this topic than me.
So I am left to approach this topic in the best way I know how…….through poetry.
I’m asking forgiveness in advance.
