disengage before sleep

I’ve found that everyone I know is different when it comes to sleep.  I’m an early to bed early to rise person….don’t show me an intense movie within hours of bedtime.  I have read myself to bed my whole life.  Recently I read a book titled “Nickel & Dimed” a book about how the minimum wage earners are not able to provide a living, by Barbara Ehrenreich   I ate this book up.   It changed me.  So I naturally began to read the next book, “Bait & Switch”.

This book is about corporate America.  I’m an ex teacher from FL.  I didn’t expect to relate to this book, other than commiserate with a lot of my friends who lost their retirement to overseas cheaper labor.  Basically the dissolution of America’s middle class.

The second chapter; Finding a coach in the land of OZ, really hit home. This is so familiar-how come?  I always suspected that teachers were jerked around by corporate America.  If students did better, then it was the program that was pushed on the school system.  If they did worse, then it was the teacher’s fault.  The books were changed every year.  I kept the books that I liked.  My students would file in and almost have a heart attack when they saw a big pile of books on their desk.  Books were what they should be, a resource, not a lesson plan.  It got to a point where we were told basically what to do & when to do it. I got out of teaching, because it had become a business.  It’s been 13 yrs since I taught.  I don’t really know what is happening now.  Perhaps with the dissolution of America’s middle class, students are left alone.

But this is not the point of this blog, the point is to relax before bed. I think that night I could have cleaned 10 houses & still not slept.  This book awakened a sleeping monster hidden in my gut.

I read, now a little more careful of the content, my husband tubes out, a good friend of mine takes a night walk.

Do anything that will help your mind disengage.

Oh and  I will finish this book, though I’ll do it during the day.
